The hint's e.g. to use the xrefresh command don't work?
Perhaps xfwm4 --replace does the job.
[rocketmouse at archlinux ~]$ pidof xfwm4
25484
[rocketmouse at archlinux ~]$ xfwm4 --replace
Waiting for current window manager (Xfwm4) on screen :0.0 to exit: Done
Then push ctrl+c.
[rocketmouse at archlinux ~]$ pidof xfwm4
25561
