do a fresh checkout or d/l the RC2 tarballs and do a 
'./configure && make && sudo make install'.

Your last attempt basically made some irrevrsible changes to the
Makefiles.

Alternatively, you could download the RC2 binary rpms and use alien to
convert them to debs.
