I'm a recent convert over to XFce4, but I felt I should chime in here on
this discussion. I feel that Joe here is hitting on one of the key
differences between noncommercial development and commercial development
-- the developers of, say, Microsoft Office, have to do what Marketing
tells them will sell more copies; in fact, their jobs depend on it.
Olivier, et al have the advantage of not having a marketing department
hanging over their heads with the XFce project, and so they're able to
do exactly what it is that *they* want a desktop environment to do, and
don't have to bend and break to every user's demands. If you don't like
a particular feature of XFce, or feel that something needs work, you're
free to contribute (the marvelous nature of open-source programming ^_^)
-- but if they don't accept your contribution, it's not because you suck
as a coder, or your idea was stupid, it's just that they don't think
that it fits with the overall philosophy of XFce. If you want your
desktop to look and behave like OSX, then get a Mac and use OSX. If you
want your desktop to look and behave like KDE, then use KDE. If you
want your desktop to look and behave like XFce...well...then here you
are =) XFce exists because a group of people want their desktop
experience to be, well, XFce-like -- not because they want to dominate
marketshare ^_^
