Hey Matt,
I just tested your patch and it looks really good so far! I think this is quite a useful addition to Xfwm4 as I think the concept of changing workspaces can be confusing for new users.
I also like the style of it, maybe some helpful (translateable) text-labels could be added or simply the names of the workspaces (as the rectangles are quite big, maybe inside)?
Haven't checked the code in detail yet, but judging from the functionality alone this is a very nice addition!
