I'd *really* like to see settings migration scripts written for all
ex-MCS apps before we do a release. I have one for xfdesktop, and I've
also written one for xsettings that I keep forgetting to commit.
They're not hard to write, and you can mostly just copy and paste what I
did for xfdesktop and change the settings names.
See:
http://svn.xfce.org/index.cgi/xfce/browse/xfdesktop/trunk/scripts
People who can't code in C: this is a perfect opportunity to contribute.
Even if you don't know perl, doing copy and paste and changing a bunch
of strings is something you should be able to figure out without too
much trouble, and it would be a *BIG* help.
Now, I'm still not convinced my approach for migrating settings is the
best one, but no one's come up with/implemented anything better. Feel
free to try. Personally I'd rather one app (maybe written in C) that
handles all settings for all known Xfce core component MCS channels, and
is started by autostart. That would clutter the autostart dir a bit
less, and we could just include that app in xfce4-settings. But...
someone needs to write it.
Regarding my readiness for an alpha, I wouldn't consider xfdesktop ready
-- there are several regressions, and missing features (like no working
backdrop lists). On the other hand, I've been feeling pretty
unmotivated to work on it lately, so maybe people complaining about it
after a release would help :-P .
