Yes, etch freeze and Xfce release make this not possible :(

There will be 4.4 backports for Etch (on backport.org or on debian
developpers repository). 

Anyway, seeing how gtk 2.10 and gtk 2.12 will be, I guess it's more
reasonable to target gtk 2.10. Only my own opinion :)
