side-by-side install weirdness revisited

I wonder if it isn't just because the maintainers for the ebuilds don't 
want to do it.  It wouldn't be difficult to do (certainly less pain than 
fooling around with automake/autoconf tools).

Maybe talking to the Gentoo guys about that would work out.  School's in 
the middle of kicking my ass right now so I haven't had a chance to look 
very deeply into the issue, but I'll keep it on my list of things to do.
