unfortunately this doesn't help, as we need a 
$datadir/icons/hicolor/index.theme, and $datadir may or may not be 
/usr/share.  if it's /opt/xfce4-cvs/share, as it is on my system, having 
hicolor-icon-theme installed via my system (to /usr) won't do one bit of 
good.

but anyway, i have a clever plan... well, we'll see if it's clever after 
it's done, anyway...
