xfprint4 headers: strings?

Could someone explain what format the strings in the headers need to be
for xfprint4? Basically, I'd like an overview of what each item does,
for instance,

    %a = 
    #?1 = 
    $t1 =
    $n  =
    $?2 = 
    $e  =
    $T  =
    $t2 =
    $Q  =

etc. That way I actually *would* be able to customize them... ;-)
