Excellent -- thanks for the info. In my linux usage, I've never used a
real session manager -- I've always been running on older hardware, so I
haven't been using full desktop environments where they're typically
found. I'll look into xsm and/or gnome-session to see if they'll do what
I desire.

Indeed! It's what makes the X environment, and *nix in general, so fun
to explore!
