Press and hold the right-shift right key right after bios checks
complete to get to the grub menu, if it is not displayed on boot. Then
you will be able to choose recovery mode (normally the second line in
the menu). This should bring you to another menu, where you can choose
to go to a prompt. That is a root console, without X or any other thing
running. ADVISORY: ~/ at the prompt will be for root, not for the
normal user. To get to the user /home, you will need to use 
     cd /home/USERNAME
