Default Application File

I thought I should provide a little more input as to how this "problem" occured.
Before installing CrossOver Office I was using AbiWord to open word files.
(I had used Thunar to set AbiWord as the default application to open doc files.)

I think was has happened is when CrossOver installed it detected my AbiWord
preference and did not delete or modify the relevant file. The million
dollar question
is: What file is Thunar changing when you use it to set the the
default application for
for a particular file type?
