Default Application File

Which file or files are used to store the default applications preferences?
I've recently installed Crossover Office because of a requirement for Office.

When I click on a file with .xls extension  Excel opens no problem.
When I click on a file with .doc extension  Mousepad opens .

Changing the default in Thunar by specifying a custom command is not possible.
I'm hoping that by examining the relevant config files I might be able
to hack the solution to this problem.
