No Desktop Wallpaper

I wrote earlier about the X clipboard failing when I try to cut and paste
among terminals and applications. Yesterday, after re-starting X to get that
capability back, the root window came up black instead of displaying the
wallpaper that I've used for several years now. For that matter, that image
file seems to be gone. Also, the xfce button on the panel was missing and
needed to be added back.

When I try to apply a graphic using Settings -> Desktop, nothing happens.
Re-installing xfce-4.6.1 makes no difference.

I'm starting to suspect memory issues even though this is a new machine
built when the old motherboard failed weekend before last. I'll run
memtest86 overnight to check this.

Does anyone have other ideas what might be causing these issues? The
system is new but for the hard drive (/dev/hda) and that might have been
injured when the video/north bridge chip failed.

I'm looking for ideas so I can check what might have happed and figure out
how to get X and xfce working again.

Thanks,

Rich
