Want xfce, not twm, as my vnc session wm

Either you're not using 4.4, or not using latest stable Xubuntu, or
using non standard packages. Xubuntu 10.4 (and afaik a lot of them
anyway) use 4.6. 4.4 was shipped something like 2 years ago, you might
want to upgrade to the just released latest LTS?
