Starting application when Camera is attached

I have downloaded images from the camera using several program;
i.e., Kodak Photo Share, HP Essentials,etc. Unfortunately, they only
work on Win32 platforms.

I have a USB card reader; however, I am not sure how to use it on a
non-Win32 machine. I have inserted a card into the slot, and the drive
lite lights up. That is about it. I have not figured out how to access
the card.
