I don't have the checkbox referenced above, possibly because I have a 
highly modified system (acer Aspire one) that I am about to abandon.
What I have found is that Dolphin (Version 1.1 Using KDE 4.1.2) is able 
to see all of my removable devices as soon as they are connected.
I installed Dolphin in an attempt to get access to my LAN (and it works 
"ok" for that). The down side is that Dolphin has none of the associations,
so selecting a file brings up a dialog box and you have to manually 
select an application to open it. I don't think it remembers the 
association even if
you indicate that it should.
