another possibly interesting piece of info: when i plug in a device,
thunar-volman does respond: on vt1 (where all sorts of system messages are
displayed), i get the following message:

thunar-volman: no property info.capabilities on device with id
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_<blah>

(<blah> is some id number of the device in question, which i assume is not
relevant.)

the (few) google hits that i've found on this error don't say very much.
they point to a possible problem with HAL, which might be fixed by up- or
downgrading, but it's unclear what exactly needs to be up- or downgraded...

what i don't understand is why it works on two machines that were upgraded
from slack 12.1/xfce 4.4 to 12.2/4.6, while it doesn't work on a fresh
12.2/4.6 install...
