"Degrades"?  Let's not get overly dramatic now.

Noticed?  How?  Have you done a survey of new Xfce users?

And what are they changing it to?  Is there some consensus as to the 
layout people change to?  Or maybe even just some similar elements of 
the result of these customisations that we can use to improve the default?

If you're actually annoyed by the default layout of a desktop 
environment, I suggest you seek professional help.  Maybe find a 
productive hobby, or something.
