Maybe mplayer was registered to handle application/octet-stream. Check
the .desktop files in $XDG_DATA_DIRS/applications/ and be sure to rerun
update-desktop-database appropriately (Gentoo should do this
automatically tho). In any case, the MIME associations aren't Xfce
specific and Xfce doesn't mess that up on it's own - the user is of
course free to mess it up at will :-) - so it's most probably a problem
with Gentoo.
