I ran xfce on an 30" apple cinema display at 2560x1600 and I'm using
1920x1200 on my laptop. So the resolution itself is not the issue.

Yes, that's the cause.

That's why the display resolution plugin in xfce doesn't list it either
and select the first available resoltuon in the Xrandr list.

In xfce 4.4, there is a "default" mode that uses the X set resolution
and ignores the Xrandr data. Therefore either remove the display MCS
plugin, fix Xrandr or switch to xfce 4.4 :)
