I tried forcing 1280x1024 in xorg.conf by using a custom modeline,
setting the refresh rate along with the resolution (1280x1024_60), and
then setting that as the only resolution. None of that worked, and
Xorg.0.log kept showing 1280x1024 as an unsupported resolution.
Xfce4 wasn't part of the problem, at least in my case.
I normally install the 'nvidia' driver anyway, and that fixed this
problem (I was curious as to why 'nv' didn't support my desired
resolution, which is why I tried those steps above). I had to use the
beta driver but now my card is supported properly in the current release.
