Hmm, this happens to me occasionally, but I usually assume it's because
I'm doing random things during development that end up making the panel
or xfdesktop or whatnot not connected to the session manager anymore.

But maybe that's not the case.  Either way, it sounds like some apps
aren't getting connected to the session manager.

Can you try starting a terminal from either the xfdesktop menu, or from
the panel menu (or a launcher), and then issuing:

echo $SESSION_MANAGER

That should tell you if it at least tried to connect to the SM...
