You're right - although there IS a sticky option (at least in my 4.3.x 
xfce) on the leftmost button (and I think some flavors don't have the 
thumbtack).

:   I run asclock in its own little window, and it's in the upper right of 
:each workspace/virtual desktop. If I wanted to tail log files, I'd run 
:them in a virtual console that's stuck on each desktop.
