You probably have selected a gtk engine that crashes gtk apps. QT engine
when used w/out KDE does cause that kind of crashes for me.

rm ~/.config/xfce4/mcs_settings/gtk.xml

I doubt that removing/reinstalling the packages will fix the issue as
the settings are stored in your home dir. BEtter try to rm the file I said.
