It's already there.  From the manual:

To maximize a window vertically :

*middle-click the maximize button of the title bar
*use Alt + F6 keyboard shortcut

To maximize a window horizontally :

*right-click the maximize button of the title bar
*use Alt + F7 keyboard shortcut
