Strange. Could you try to run without session manager; just make an ~/.xinitrc
with the following lines and use startx instead of startxfce4:

 xfce-mcs-manager
 xfcwm4 --daemon
 xfdesktop &
 xftaskbar4 &

 exec xfce4-panel
