Hi,

In simple terms, a session manager keeps track of the applications that 
you start so that when you login again it will restore your desktop to 
the state that it was when you last logged off.

This depends on the applications that you run implementing the client 
end of the X session management protocol. If they don't, they wont be 
restored properly.

And, as extra eye candy, the session manager also displays a splash 
screen. This, of course, is why everybody *really* uses it. ;-)
