it's coming.  support for this will likely be in 4.2.  though i suddenly 
started messing with drag'n'drop for the menu, and i'd like to get 
desktop icons working, so who knows...

that'll work, with one modification.  after you change the backdrop in 
the config file, run 'xfdesktop -reload'.
