different backgrounds

is there any way of specifying different backgrounds for each virtual 
desktop? i like different backgrounds so i can immediately tell which 
desktop i'm using (i'm too stoopid to look at the pager)

if not, is there any reason why a small script which changes the 
background path in the config files and then switches desktop wouldn't 
work (mapped to the change-desktop keys)?
