No desktop menu in Gentoo's CVS ebuild

Brian J. Tarricone had the occasion to say the following:

Alright Brainiac (look how you signed),
I don't remember if I replied to you already (I've been having mail troubles), so here it is for posterity and the kids:
Xfdesktop didn't give any output and there is no file on my system starting with libxfce_desktop*.
What do I try now?
