You can put 'exec xterm' at the top of your .xinitrc and use startx.  
Then you can run startxfce4 from that terminal.

Very. Sounds like and X / video card issue.

That library is certainly not part of xfce. In fact I never heard of  
it, nor do I have it on my system.
