XFCE4 FreeBSD 5.1 install problems

I have had a similar problem with the wrong pc file being found because 
it occurred first in the path i.e. 
/usr/share/pkgconfig:/usr/local/share/pkgconfig

The fix was to either

Delete the offending pc file

or

Change the PATH and PKG_CONFIG_PATH variables to have the directory with 
the correct pc file listed first.
