Installing GTK Deletes XFce?

Wow, that sure is a lot more convenient!
However, I found out the hard way that that last line above should be:
> # execute from ../xfce/xfce-devel
because the "middle" directory has to be xfce.
I got the following error during the process:
xfce/xfce-devel/xfce4...
./configure --enable-static=no && make uninstall && make install &&
make distclean
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `xfcerc.ca', needed by `all-am'.
Stop. make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1
xfce/xfce4-extras/xfce4-iconbox...
./configure --enable-static=no && make uninstall && make install &&
make distclean
I wonder if I'm going to be able to run xfce4 when I log on again...
Later: Yes, could. But I wonder what was the effect of the above
problem.
How do you preserve a working version of xfce in case your compilation
of a new one won't fly? Is everything in a single directory that can be
renamed to preserve it?
