I'm sorry I can't remember reading your question before. This is a
problem with the gtk file selection dialog, that is the toolkit used by
xfce.
The solution is to type '.' (without the quotes) in the file entry box
at the bottom and press <Tab>. It has pretty good tab-completion. In
fact this is the only way I use this dialog.

The gtk dialog has _never_ shown dot files.
