I cannot speak to anything else but I know why this came up (Olivier
didn't tell why but I don't mind doing it).

Since 1998 I have hosted the domains and the mailing lists and have paid
for the domain registration all out of my own pocket. Olivier does so
much work on this wonderful product that it seemed like the least I
could do. The domain came due again and this time (due to economic
circumstances I think we're all somewhat familiar with) I am not in a
position to pay for the domain fees again (I have the money but if I
spent it that way I believe my wife would stop speaking to me for a
while). The hosting is no problem but I simply could not put the domain
fee into my meager budget again. So I spoke with Olivier via email about
it. He's already taken care of the domain fee but mentioned that he
might see if the xfce community might be responsive to a call for
donations it would help with this issue as well as any hardware needs
which arise.

So that's some idea of what they would be for.
