Understanding colors

I've little quibble with the colors of the root window, control panel, and
most of my applications. However, the colors of jpilot just don't meet the
same standards. One of the local gurus suggested that I could tune the
colors for this app in ~/.gtkrc. But, that looks like it's set by xfce and I
can't figure out which part affects what.

My problem with the jpilot display is that data entry widgets have the
same background color as the window frame in most color schemes, and the
text remains black so I can't see it. Actually, the URL-entry widget in
opera has the same color problem.

I don't have a lot of time to learn all the subtleties of color in X an
xfce, but is there something I can read so that I can fix the display of
individual applications so they work better for me?

TIA,

Rich
