Does GKrellm do this?  Even if it doesn't, it has many of the features
of the various gnome and kde applets built in.  If I were you I'd check
it out.  It works very well with XFce.

(using the  ////// areas on the far left and right of the top of the
xfce panel.  For some reason people don't seem to think of this..  It's
probably in the docs, though.)

Be sure to glance through the provided docs.  Olivier has built a very
comprehensive user manual (the far right "i" icon.)
