there is a conf file for checkinstall, mine was in /etc/checkinstallrc
if I recall. Check that file and look for a line "EXCLUDE" and just put
in the "icon-theme.cache" with it's entire path.

For me, this solved the problem for some other package but Thunar still
tried to replace other files and in the end I got bored and just
installed the standard way "sudo make install"!
