Agreed.  Perhaps put it in the menu?  Maybe have a submenu of the View 
menu that contains just radio menu items:

View
`- Sidebar
     +- o None
     +- o Filesystem Tree
     `- o Bookmarks

Though I'm not too hot on "Filesystem Tree".  "Tree" sounds too 
nonspecific, and "Filesystem" sounds too general.
