Maybe the simplest way to build from source is to clone my repository:

git clone https://gitlab.xfce.org/Tamaranch/mousepad.git
cd mousepad
git checkout avoid-deprecation-warnings-4
./autogen.sh
make
sudo make install

Then mousepad should be in /usr/local/bin and take precedence over the one in /usr/bin, so that you can just use it as usual, and check that there are no particular problems.
