Development process

Hello, I would like to ask you some newbie question.

What is the way to develop xfce? I mean "if" you are running xfce desktop
and develop xfce code in some for example gtk editor, than compile/link it,
than what? You test it in some VM or you log off and login to newly
compiled xfce or what? So my question is if you could describe this part of
development process for newbies.
