To be fair, if you want all this, pulseaudio /is/ a fine solution, and xfce4-
pulseaudio-plugin does the job pretty fine. xfce4-mixer (and xfce4-volumed)
are nice for people who just want a graphical alsamixer and keybindings
without having to think about it. Also note that relying on plain alsa means
!Linux users are out there in the cold, but I'm not sure there are a lot of
other solutions.
