Sure. However, once the code compiles, doesn't crash and more or less 
does what it used to do - bring it back into master. Also, to avoid 
merge conflicts we shouldn't add substantial features to master while 
porting.

Maybe we shouldn't add such features in this cycle at all? Just port it, 
make it stable and ship as soon as it is ready?

That's more an management issue - we should have a policy for applying 
compatibility changes. Some of my patches for 4.10 are still rotting in 
bugzilla.
