hal is dead upstream.

Well, it's not quite about drivers but more generally about the desktop
stuff which are linked to the kernel.

Xfce team doesn't have the manpower to implement everything from
scratch, and it's not a good idea anyway. So they try to use common
standards and libs, especially from freedesktop.org. Standardising is
nice because it allows stuff to run properly and consistently everywhere
it's implemented. 

Now the problem is that non Linux kernels have issues supporting these
standards and, yes, it's a shame, but Xfce can't do much about that.
