xfdesktop's danielm/port-to-gio branch rebased

Hey Daniel,

I rebased your branch on the current master because it some
conflicting changes were introduced there. 

I'd like to push 4.8 forward and therefore would like to know what your
plans are with regards to xfdesktop. Are you planning to continue your
port to GIO?
