Maybe it is wise to ask the xorg developers and the freedesktop xdg
mailinglists what they advice for the desktop environment.

I can only say for myself that I find it very hard for maintainability
to use a desktop depended tools like xfconf to configure such
important settings. I maintain a lot of xfce desktops with a lot of
different monitors, so I like to keep maintenance cost and risks as
low as possible by using more controllable desktop in-depended
configuration files.
