Historically, I've tried to keep to the GNOME HIG, with borders of 8
where they say 12.  Like Nick said, consistency is much more important
than personal preferences, so I'm all for following the GHIG ;-)
Additional advantages:
- easier to point people to the guidelines
- fits better with GNOME apps
