If you want to save some headaches by not having to deal with
platform-dependent stuff then GStreamer is a good option. Keep in mind
that only a small part of GStreamer is linked and loaded with the
mixer (gstreamer-0.10, gstbase, gstaudio and gstinterfaces).
ALSA is not everything we have to deal with

That's up to you, of course. If I were running a binary distribution, I
wouldn't mind the two or three extra packages. And it's not like you'd
install GStreamer just for the mixer. After all the mixer is just a
tool to configure your sound card for use with other multimedia
applications - and a lot of them use GStreamer.
