Fyi, i had the  same issue, running startxfce4 from  slim filled
/var/log/slim.log with the apps messages that went in .xsession-errors
before, when i was using xdm. That's just normal, it depends on your apps
and of the debug information they output (mplayer likes filling logs for
example..)
